Navigating significant life transitions
Below, I describe in detail two reasons people often seek help: because of self-destructive patterns of behavior and difficulty managing significant life transitions.
Self-Destructive Behaviors
Self-destructive behaviors manifest in a number of different ways, including:
-
Substance Abuse
-
Damaging Relationships
-
Impulsivity
-
Disordered Eating
-
Chronic Procrastination
-
Obsessive Worries and Thoughts
-
Lack of Self-Care
While these self-destructive behaviors act as coping mechanisms to manage pain and stress, they also lead to isolation from the people and activities that bring joy, connection, and a secure sense of self. The process of therapy allows clients to gain a deeper understanding of the role these behaviors play and the impact on their lives. Acceptance, understanding, and tools gained in therapy allow clients to let go of old self-destructive patterns and replace them with more adaptive means of coping.
Navigating Significant Life Transitions
Many individuals seek therapy for help with the following kinds of transitions:
-
Entering or leaving college or graduate school
-
Making career changes or unemployment
-
Coming out
-
Mourning the death of a loved one
-
Moving
-
Beginning or ending a romantic relationship
-
Becoming a parent
-
Retirement and aging
Psychotherapy helps clients gain a deeper awareness of the impact of transitions on their relationships, one's sense of self, and daily functioning. Working together, I help my clients make sense of their distress and to make choices they need to feel engaged in and empowered by the process of change.
